Heading toward the London Olympics, the 2012 FINA Diving World Cup, scheduled from February 20-26, represents the final chance to qualify to compete at the Games, and has a number of very serious implications for the U.S.
The competition will be the first major international championship to be held in the new Olympic pool, so many of the competitors will get their first taste of the competition "arena." More importantly though, it is the last opportunity for the United States, and many of the 42 competing diving federations to qualify for the ability to compete at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Currently, the U.S. has earned the maximum allowable individual Olympic slots (2) in only men's platform and women's springboard. This was achieved by finishes at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, China. At the same event the U.S. also earned one slot in women's platform and men's springboard. That makes six out of a possible 12 slots. The U.S. has not earned any spots in synchronized diving, which will present a tall order in London.
If the U.S. fails to qualify all four synchro teams, it will be the second time since the inclusion of synchro that the U.S. has failed to send the maximum number of competitors - in 2000 and 2004, the U.S. failed to qualify a women's synchronized springboard team.
