The FINA World Cup was first contested in 1979 at The Woodlands, Texas, and has been held every other year since with the exception of 1999 and 2000 when it was held in successive years. As a result of that change, the World Cup is now held in the year of the Olympics and acts as a test event for the Games.
The World Cup is held in the year in which the World Championships is not held, and as such is considered a de facto world championship for the sport of diving, except when held during the Olympic year.
