Despite being labeled as the "Outdoor" National Championships, this competition does not necessarily take place outdoors, but it does take place during the summer months.
As the second major national championship event of the year, the "Outdoor" nationals goes by a variety of names such as Summer Nationals or just plain National Championships. The current version is known by its sponsor; The AT&T National Diving Championships.
The men's 1-meter event is a relatively late addition to the party, beginning in the mid-1960, as opposed to men's platform which began almost at the turn of the century!
