Top American Olympic Divers

By , About.com Guide

Once the undisputed force in international diving, the American myth was shattered in 2004 as the U.S. team failed to win a medal for the first time in Olympic diving history. 2008 may prove to be a different story as a young enthusiastic group of divers and a few veterans will look to reverse that trend.

The U.S. Olympic team will be chosen beginning June 18, with the Olympic diving trials. Team spots will be filled by winners of four indivdiual events - men's and women's springboard, and men's and women's platform. The remainder of the team will be selected at the U.S. Olympic Team Selection Camp in early July.

With his bronze medal at the 2008 FINA World Cup, David Boudia became the first American male to win an individual Olympic, world championship, or world cup medal in men's platform since Scott Donie in 1992.

Troy Dumais

Beijing will be the third, and final Olympics for veteran Troy Dumais. A consistent international medalist, he has never finished lower than sixth in four Olympic events. Will 2008 be kind to Troy?

Thomas finished second at the 2004 Olympic Trials, but did not make the team. Since that time he and synchro partner David Boudia have been the most successful international divers on the U.S. team, highlighted by a bronze at the 2007 World Championships. The pair look to be the best chance for an American medal in diving.

Laura Wilkinson

Laura Wilkinson was flying under the radar prior to the 2000 Olympics and her upset of the heavily favored Chinese on platform. In Beijing, she won't be able to hide and with the Chinese women showing that they are vulnerable in this event, 2008 promises to be very interesting for this girl from Texas.

Chris Colwill

Chris Colwill has one of the most difficult diving lists in the world, and if he is on . . . watch out! He has the international experience and talent to make his name known in Beijing, but he must compete against his teammate Troy Dumais . . . and the Chinese!

As unique as they are individually, this duo has shown they can compete on the world stage. With three international synchro medals so far in 2008, three in 2006, and silver in the Pan Am Games last year, these two women look to be primed and ready to hit the big stage in Beijing.
