Olympic Update:
Chantelle finished a disappointing 14th in the women's springboard competition, bringing to an end a successful diving career for Australia's only female Olympic gold medalist. She will retire to the life of a mom and her position as National Talent Identification Coordinator for Diving Australia.Diver and Mom:
U.S. swimmer Dara Torres may get most of the publicity as an athlete and mom, but Chantelle Newbery has a child to go with each of two Olympic medals. Her first son Jet, was born in 2002, and she had her second son Ryder, in 2006.Sticking with Springboard:
Chantelle became the first Australian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in diving with her victory on platform in 2004. At the age of 31, she will not defend her Olympic gold on platform, but will instead compete only on springboard. Its in the Family:
Chantelle is married to current Australian Olympic diver, Robert Newbery. Between the two of them, they have five Olympic medals. Husband Robert has three bronze medals, all in synchronized diving. Chantelle only has two, but she does have the only gold in the family!Always a Threat:
At any event she enters, Chantelle is definitely a threat to medal. The question will be that as a wife and a mother of two, has she had the focus and the time to train properly to compete in Beijing. As a mother, the trials and tribulations of parenting put competitions in a different perspective than any of the other divers. As a result, she may be more relaxed than many of the other competitors.Chantelles Stats:
