NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships

How Does a Diver Qualify?

By Woody Franklin, About.com

NCAA Division II Championships

In the NCAA Division II championships, divers must go through a two-step process similar to that of Division I. Divers must first meet the qualifying standard and once that standard is met, they then participate in a a qualifying meet that is conducted on the day prior to the start of the championships.

Qualifying Scores

Just as in Division I, qualifying for men and women is based on scores from an individual performance at a collegiate competition. In Division II, a diver in a dual meet must perform six dives. These dives can either be made of six optional dives without a limit on the degree of difficulty, or one voluntary dive with an assigned D.D. of 2.0, followed by five optional dives without limit on the D.D.

In championships meets, the competition consists of 11 dives. On one-meter, both the men and women perform five voluntary dives with a limit on the total D.D. of 9.0. These voluntary dives are followed by six optional dives (five for women) without limit on D.D. On three-meter both men and women perform 11 dives: five voluntary dives with a D.D. limit of 9.5, and six optional dives without a limit on D.D.

Qualifying Meet

After achieving the required qualifying score, divers must participate in a qualifying meet on the day prior to the championships. This meet uses a championship format of 11 dives, and the top-16 divers in each event advance to the Division II national championships.
