Definition:

The forward approach is the walk to the end of the board prior to the hurdle and takeoff. According to FINA rules, the rules followed by USA Diving and the AAU, their is no minimum or maximum number of steps that must be taken prior to the hurdle. Collegiate competitions governed by NCAA swimming and diving rules, and high school competitions governed by the National Federation of State High School Associations, require the approach to contain at least three steps prior to the hurdle and take-off.
