Is The Junior Zone Meet the Toughest?

Friday July 10, 2009

What is the toughest, most pressure packed summer diving competition? That is a debatable question, but for my money, I vote for the junior zone meet sponsored by USA Diving. If you consider the number of divers involved - close to 700 divers in five zones, and the stakes, it has to be the most pressure packed of all the meets that take place in the summer.

The Olympic Trials is full of pressure, and so are senior nationals, but for a larger group of junior divers there is so much more at stake than just making it the Speedo Junior Nationals. It means moving up the junior ranks, and being noticed by college coaches. Combine that with the fact that the vast majority of the divers competing at the zone meets are with their parents - a fact that generally increases the stress level, and you end up with a pressure packed event!
